The Seafarer SOAPSTone Speaker The speaker in the Seafarer is a man who spends a great amount of time on the sea. He loves spending time on the sea, but he also regrets it in a way. Occasion The author writes this story on the occasion of the cold feelings he gets. He not only starts off with his cold feelings but also with frozen physical characteristics. Audience The story was probably meant to entertain the Anglo-Saxons. Although it informs our generation, the author might not have thought of that. Purpose The story was probably written to entertain and inform the Anglo-Saxons about the life of a seafarer. Maybe he even wrote it to point out the contrast between land and sea. Subject The descriptions of the sea compared to the land become the main subject of the story. He connects this to spirituality. Tone The tone is harsh, cursing the life on sea and hoping for better. Other times, the tone is pleasing. He describes the sea as something close to his heart and enjoyable.
Characters Arveragus-A Knight who travels a lot and wants a wife that is patience Dorigen-Arveragus wife She is depressed because Arveragus is gone a lot. Aurelius- A rich neighbor who is in love with Dorigen. Location and time In the land called Brittney 6th of May Plot Arvergus wanted a wife to complete his life. So he took a maiden named Dorigen. She vowed to love and stay true to him. He then left her to travel to many places so he could get more money. Since he was gone for a long time she felt lonely and sad. Aurelius invited her to many events but she always said no. He invited her to a picnic and she said yes to that. Aurelius decided to tell her that he loved her while she was there. She loved her husband a lot and did not want to betray him so she said if you can take all the black rocks off my coast then I promise to be with you. \ Aurelius prayed to Apollo so that a flood could come and cover the rocks. Meanwhile Arvergius had came back and Dorigen was now happy. There was no flood and Aurelius was about to give up but his brother told him of a man who had a magic book and could say a spell that could make all the rocks go away. The spell was said and Dorigen had to decide if she would stay with her husband or keep her promise. She couldn’t decide so she told her husband what happen and he was like you cant break a promise so he sent her to Aurelius place. Aurelius saw the sacrifice that was made and he felt bad. So he told Dorigen to go back. Aurelius found out that he did not have any money to pay the man that casted the spell. The man forgave the debt because Aurelius was generous and gave him meat and ale.
The Physician’s Tale From the Canterbury Tales By Thomas Johnson Background Information The story is told by Titus Livius. The main characters are a knight named Virginius, a maiden, a judge named Apius, and a devious man named Claudius. The knight and his wife have a beautiful and virtuous daughter. The Story The maiden was going to the village church to perform her temple rites. A judge named Apius looked at her and said to himself, “She shall be mine, in spite of any man!”
The devil ran into the man’s heart and the judge schemed of ways to get the maiden. The Story Continued The judge found a shady man to share his plan with while making him swear not to tell anyone. They plotted about what they were going to do in order to get the knight’s daughter. The conspirator’s name is Claudius. The Story Continued Claudius faked a bill for Apius against Virginius. Virginius went to court and this was the court bill: “My lord, to you now, Apius so dear, Shows here your humble servant Claudius How this knight whom they call Virginius / Against the law, against all equity, Against my will express, withholds from me My servant, one who is my thrall by right, One who was stolen from my house by night When she was very young. The Story Continued This I will prove / With witnesses, that justly you may move. She's not his daughter, say what he may say. Wherefore to you, my lord the judge, I pray, Yield me my slave, if that should be your will." That was all that the bill said. Virginius goes home in order to tell his daughter about the events.
The Story Continued He can’t let his daughter fall into the hands of Apius, who he realizes is bad. He tells his daughter that he has to cut off her head so that she will not have to suffer. He cut off her head and brought it to the judge. Apius ordered for Virginius to be executed but peasants come to the righteous knights rescue. The Story Continued Apius was thrown in jail, and committed suicide. Claudius was condemned to death, but Virginius gave him mercy and he was only exiled.
Theme At the end of the story the physician gives advice which says, “Forsake sin or for sin you'll be forsaken.” This is the theme.
